There is a German Military Cemetery near to where I live. It is set in a woodland area near a Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery where ANZAC soldiers who were killed in WW1 and WW2 are buried. So in a small place on a quiet corner of England, set amongst the natural beauty of Cannock Chase are the young dead of an earlier generation.
It is of the 4,000 souls buried of the German Military I turn my attention. Here in the place called Deutcher Soldatenfriedhof I was once moved to write. And so this poem was composed.
